Vision & Mission

Today Siddha medicine is taught through universities and also practiced by traditional physicians as well as university trained doctors. Unfortunately university teachings have lost the sacredness that was conceived the Siddhars by modern education systems by dilution, flexibility and ignorance. Till very recent times Siddha medicine was taught in a Gurukula system, from master to disciples, at the masters residence or clinic and took many years of dedicated practice to be able to practice alone. Most of the authentic manuscripts are still held by many families and are not available to the general public. Those manuscripts that has been donated has been misinterpreted and misrepresented many times causing many difficulties to the student, practitioner and the patient.

Deva Vidya was established in the earlier nineties, as a Traditional Gurukula System, under the eminent leadership of Prem Nath. He hailing from a Siddha family of famous physicians, followed the footsteps of his grandfather, Late Sri Narayanan Vaidyar and started practicing traditional siddha science and marma therapies. He uses his large collection of manuscripts for advancing and spreading the Siddhar wisdom to all.

Siddha Training

Today there are recognized Siddha Medical Colleges, run under the government universities where Siddha medicine is taught. But they are running the course with very average syllabus compare to the knowledge of traditional Vaidyas. In Siddha Vaidyam there are many toxic drugs and heavy metals are using for manufacture bhasmas and chindooras. Lake of proper purification will cause major draw-backs in health. Traditional Siddha Physicians are doing effective purification process. But they hide it as traditional secret and transfer only to the next generation.

Marma Shastra - " The Vulnerable Spots"

The vulnerable spots are the life giving spots of human body. According to the 'SidhaVaidya', which is a Dravidian science of medicine, in human body there are 108 vulnerable spots and 51 anti vulnerable spots. If any injury occurs in the vulnerable spots, then we will have loss of consciousness, fatigue and convulsions. Those who lose consciousness like these we can bring them back to the original state by knocking the anti-vulnerable spots (Adangal). If we don't do this they may die or may become handicapped.
Kalaripayyattu and the ancient medical texts in the Dravidian and Sanskrit traditions share the concept of the ‘vital spots’ in the human body, which is made up of the Pancha Bhootas (five basic elements), air, water, earth, fire and ether. Prana (life energy) flows through the body channeled through marmas or vital points.Attacking the vital spots caused the opponent to be stunned, disarmed or even killed and is essential to the highest stage of training given by Gurukkal to their most accomplished students in the Kalari.
Agastya identifies 108 vital points in the body and this knowledge is gained by the most exceptional students by dedicated study under their Masters for anywhere between 12 to 18 years by demonstrating great yogic ability and control of mind to avoid the remotest possibility of any misuse of such great powers.
Marma chikilsa is also a complete naturalistic healing system to rejuvenate the body by eliminating toxic imbalances to restore resistance and good health in the highly stressful environment of modern times.
Since this is a very dangerous type of application the guru used to teach this only to those disciples who are noble and trust worthy. According to scientific books this knowledge which was created by Lord Siva reached man kind through saint Agastya with Lord Subramanian's favour. Divine persons like Agastya, Bhogar and Therayar have described in the books of Marmashastra that the science of vulnerable spot should be taught only to those disciples who carry out the instructions of guru patiently for 12 years and after taking the apt gift from him.
These types of application to the vulnerable and anti-vulnerable spots are described in the southern system which is the Dravidian art of warfare. In Naalumantra and Bheeman vazhi importance is given to this type of training. But today, those who know about these are very rare.

Principles of Siddha - " A part of the Traditional Secrete "

Siddha Medicine’ means medicine that is perfect. . Siddha Medicine revitalizes and rejuvenates the organs, the dysfunction of which is causing the disease. This brings back normal functioning of the organs. It also maintains the ratio of Vata, Pitta and Kapha, thus maintaining the healthy state of the body. Since no artificial chemicals are involved, it doesn’t cause any side effects. The Siddha Medicine given to practitioners include leaves, flowers, fruit and various roots in a mixed basis. In some extrodinary cases this medicine is not at all cured. For those such cases they recommend to take Phasmas, Chindooras, Pathangas etc.
Most of the practicing Siddha medical practitioners are traditionally trained usually in families and also by different gurus(teachers). When the guru is also a martial arts teacher, he is also known as an Ashan.
According to the Siddha medicine various psychological and physiological functions of the body are attributed to the combination of seven elements: first is saram (plasma) responsible for growth, development and nourishment; second is cheneer (blood) responsible for nourishing muscles, imparting colour and improving intellect; the third is ooun (muscle) responsible for shape of the body; fourth is kollzuppu (fatty tissue) responsible for oil balance and lubricating joints; fifth is enbu (bone) responsible for body structure and posture and movement; sixth is moolai (nerve) responsible for strength; and the last is sukila (semen) responsible for reproduction. Like in Ayurveda, in Siddha medicine also the physiological components of the human beings are classified as Vatha (air), Pitha (fire) and Kapha (earth and water). When the normal equilibrium of three humors (vatha, pitha and kapha) is disturbed, disease is caused.
The treatment in Siddha medicine is aimed at keeping the three humors in equilibrium and maintenance of seven elements. So proper diet, medicine and a disciplined regimen of life are advised for a healthy living and to restore equilibrium of humors in diseased condition. The treatment should be commenced as early as possible after assessing the course and cause of the disease. Treatment is classified into three categories: devamaruthuvum (Divine method); manuda maruthuvum (rational method); and asura maruthuvum (surgical method). In Divine method medicines like parpam, chendooram, guru, kuligai made of mercury, sulphur and pashanams are used. In the rational method, medicines made of herbs like churanam, kudineer, vadagam are used. In surgical method, incision, excision, heat application, blood letting, leech application are used.

Origin of Siddha

The Siddha System of medicine is the oldest traditional treatment system generated from Dravidian culture. Siddha system of medicine is believed to be the oldest medical system in the known universe. The system is believed to be developed by 18 Siddhas in the south called siddhar. They are the ancient supernatural spiritual saints of India and the Siddha system is believed to be handed over to the Siddhar by the Hindu God - Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi.

Siddhars were of the concept that a healthy soul can only be developed through a healthy body. So they developed methods and medication that are believed to strengthen their physical body and thereby their souls. Men and women who dedicated their lives into developing the system were called ‘Siddhars’. They practiced intense yogic practices, including years of fasting and meditation. And believed to have achieved super natural powers and gained the supreme wisdom and overall immortality. Through this spiritually attained supreme knowledge, they wrote scriptures on all aspects of life, from arts to science and truth of life to miracle cure for diseases.

The word Siddha comes from the word Siddhi which means an object to be attained perfection or heavenly bliss. Siddha focused to "Ashtamahasiddhi" that is the eight supernatural power. Those who attained or achieved the above said powers are known as Siddhars. There were 18 important siddhars in olden days and they developed this system of medicine. Hence, it is called Siddha Medicine.
